One Dollar Kept1 Kings 18:44

I Put A Dollar Aside On Purpose

This message is for the woman who felt ridiculous holding back one dollar, who wants a first small act to count as a beginning

You folded it once and put it behind the tin.

That was Thursday. You had gotten change, and there was a dollar in it, and instead of putting it in with the rest you held it in your hand for a second and then folded it and put it at the back of the shelf where the coffee is.

Nobody saw you do it. It took four seconds.

And then you felt ridiculous.

That is what I want to work on, because I think the four seconds were the significant part of your week and the feeling afterward has been trying to take them off you ever since.

Here is what the feeling said. It said: one dollar. It said, more or less, that this is the kind of thing a person does when they cannot do anything real, a small ceremony performed in a kitchen instead of an actual solution. It said you were playing at something.

And you have half believed that since Thursday, and there has been a small pull toward going and getting it, not because you need it but because retrieving it would settle the embarrassment.

I want to say plainly what happened on Thursday, and it is not the money.

You made a decision.

Something in you, in the middle of an ordinary transaction, said: not this one. And then your hand did something about it. That is a decision followed immediately by an action, which is a rarer sequence in a life than anybody admits, and most people's good intentions never get past the first half of it.

And I am going to do one more thing in this article, and it is a refusal.

I am not going to build anything on top of it.

There is no plan coming. Nothing here turns this into a weekly habit, a system, a challenge or a first step in a program. If I did that, I would take the one clean thing you did and make it the beginning of something you could fail at, and by next month the failure would be the thing you remembered.

One dollar. Kept on purpose. That is the entire subject.

A little cloud like a man's hand

There is a moment on a mountain in Kings where a servant is sent to look at the sea, and what he eventually reports is almost nothing.

And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man's hand. (1 Kings 18:44, King James Version)

A little cloud, like a man's hand.

Elijah had told him to go and look, and he had gone six times and come back with nothing. On the seventh he saw this: a cloud so small he described it by holding up his own hand.

Look at how little that is. It is not a bank of cloud. It is not a change in the weather. It is a smudge on the horizon that most people standing on that mountain would not have mentioned, and it is entirely reasonable to think he felt slightly foolish reporting it.

And Elijah does not ask him to wait for more.

He does not say go back and see if it grows. He treats that hand sized cloud as the thing itself, and sends word down the mountain immediately, and acts on it as fully as if the sky were already black.

Now notice what I am not doing with this, because there is an obvious move here and it is the wrong one.

I am not telling you that your dollar is a little cloud that becomes a downpour. That reading turns the cloud into a promise and makes the small thing valuable only because of what came next, which is exactly the trap this whole site is written to stay out of.

What the passage gives you is something better and smaller. It gives you a man treating a genuinely tiny thing as real, without waiting for it to get bigger first, and it does not make him look foolish for it.

That is what you did on Thursday, and the embarrassment has been telling you it does not count until it is larger.

A small real thing is allowed to be treated as real, and it has never once had to get bigger first to count. 1 Kings 18:44 has a man report a cloud the size of a hand and be taken seriously, and the Holy Spirit is the one present with somebody folding a dollar in a kitchen.

Kept on purpose is a different thing from left over

Here is the practical half, and it is the distinction the embarrassment cannot see.

There is money that is left over and there is money that is kept, and they are not the same substance.

Most of what has ever survived a week in your house survived by accident. It did not get spent because nothing came up, and it sat there passively until something did, and then it went. That money never had a decision attached to it at any point.

Thursday's dollar is different in kind. It was on its way somewhere and you stopped it. There was a moment of intention in the middle of an ordinary act, and the dollar behind that tin is the physical residue of a choice you made about yourself.

That is why it feels strange, incidentally. You have not done that before. A thing that has never happened in a house feels odd the first time regardless of its size.

And here is why the embarrassment came so fast, because it is worth understanding. Feeling ridiculous is what happens when you do something that does not match the story you hold about your situation. Your story says: nothing I can do about this is meaningful. Thursday contradicted it. And the contradiction was uncomfortable, so a feeling arrived to close the gap and put the story back.

The way to keep the four seconds is not to argue with the feeling. It is to leave the dollar where it is.

An object cannot be talked out of existing. As long as it stays behind that tin, the story is not accurate, and the disagreement is settled by a piece of paper rather than by you having to win an argument in your own head.

Money kept on purpose is a different thing from money left over, and a decision has never once been measured by the size of what it moved. The written word takes a hand sized cloud seriously without waiting, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with somebody whose own story has just been contradicted.

Keep one back today

So here is the assignment, and it happens in the middle of something else.

Keep one dollar back deliberately today and put it somewhere you will not spend it.

Today, during an ordinary transaction. Not from savings and not from anything set aside. From money that was going somewhere: change from something, or a note in your hand.

The point is the moment. You are doing an ordinary thing, and you stop one dollar on its way past, and you do it deliberately rather than because it was surplus.

Then put it somewhere it will not get spent. Behind the tin, in a book, in a pocket of the bag you do not use. It does not need to be secure. It needs to be somewhere your hand does not go absently.

And that is all.

There is nothing after this. Do not do it again tomorrow because I said so. Do not decide that this is now a thing you do. Do not tell yourself you will build on it, and above all do not go and look at how much is behind the tin, because looking is counting and counting is the beginning of a plan.

If you do it again next week, that will be its own decision on its own day, complete in itself, and it will not be the second entry in anything.

And when the ridiculous feeling arrives, and it will arrive again about a minute afterward, you do not have to argue with it. You just do not act on it. The whole assignment is over by then. The feeling can say what it likes and the dollar is behind the tin.

You are able to stop one dollar on its way past and leave it there, and the feeling that follows has never once needed to be argued with. 1 Kings 18:44 treats the smallest possible sign as the real thing, and the Holy Spirit is the one present with a woman putting a folded note behind a tin.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over somebody with a dollar behind a tin.

That was a decision and not a gesture, and one dollar kept on purpose has never once been nothing. I am not building a plan on top of it and there is no system anywhere in this article. 1 Kings 18:44 says behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man's hand, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who takes the ridiculous feeling off a woman in her own kitchen.

And this, which is the word I came with:

Kept on purpose is a different substance from left over, and Thursday was the first of the second kind in that house. The written word takes the smallest thing seriously without waiting for it to grow, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with you when you keep one back today.

One dollar. On its way past. Somewhere you will not reach.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Feeling that arrived four seconds after I folded it, you came to close a gap and put my old story back where it was. 1 Kings 18:44 says behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man's hand, so by the Holy Spirit I keep one back today and I leave it where it is in the name of Jesus.
  2. Story that nothing I do about this is meaningful, you were contradicted on Thursday by a piece of paper and you cannot argue with an object. The word takes the hand sized thing at full value and does not wait for it to grow, and by the Holy Spirit I am done calling a decision a gesture.
  3. Father, You had a man report a cloud the size of his own hand and You did not send him back to wait for more. Your word says there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, so by Your Spirit I keep one dollar on purpose, and I put it out of reach, and I do not count it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
